Let's Clear the Air

NY Waterway, in collaboration with local, state, and federal government partners has invested nearly $6 million to reducing private ferry emissions, resulting in improved air quality and a cleaner New York Harbor today and for years to come.

NY Waterway®, has partnered with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT), and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) on this effort.

Listen to our story below:

WE’VE:

  • Lowered emissions on 31 ferries
  • Converted to 100% ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel
  • Worked with equipment manufacturers to develop custom-built, pollution-reducing technology for the ferries
  • Installed advanced Caterpillar C18 ACERT marine propulsion engines in nine vessels – the C18 ACERT engine meets the most stringent offshore emissions requirements

MAKING A CLEAR DIFFERENCE TODAY FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE:

  • On 22 vessels with EPA Tier 1 Engines we’ve installed diesel oxidation catalysts. This emission reduction technology will reduce carbon monoxide emissions by 40%, particulate matters emissions by 20%, and volatile organic compounds by 50%
  • On nine vessels originally with unregulated engines, we installed the diesel oxidation catalysts and new EPA Tier 2* engines. These modifications will reduce the total emissions by approximately 85%
