Seventeen tall ships and 10 warships will mark the beginning of OpSail 2012 and Fleet Week New York, the executive director of Operation Sail Inc. announced today.

"OpSail is bringing the tall ships of the world back to New York," said Chris O’Brien.  “Majestic tall sailing ships have always been a centerpiece of joint OpSail/U.S. Navy commemorations and the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the writing of The Star-Spangled Banner provides the perfect context for this memorable occasion."

NY Waterway is Once Again Honored to Provide "FREE" Commuter Ferry Service to all Military Personnel!

Service men and women must present ID showing their active duty or veteran status to ride free on all NY Waterway commuter ferry routes.

Fleet Weeks a great time to take the family on the "ferry" to NYC to see and honor:

The Thousands of Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen from U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard ships will be in Manhattan for Fleet Week New York.  Hosted nearly every year since 1984, Fleet Week New York is the City's celebration of the sea services. This annual event also provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness first hand the latest capabilities of today's Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Team. Fleet Week includes dozens of military demonstrations and displays throughout the week, as well as public visitation of many of the participating ships.

 

 

What Is There To Do During Fleet Week?:

  • Tour visiting ships
  • lectures
  • watch the parade of ships in the harbor
  • watch competitions, including tug of war and eating contests
  • Memorial Day ceremony
  • musical performances by sailors and marines

Fleet Week Event Schedule:

All events are free, unless they are held at the USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, which means you'll need to buy tickets to enter the museum (though admission to the Intrepid is free for active and retired military). All events are held in Manhattan, unless otherwise indicated.
